Learn how to install and use a Takahashi CAA to rotate your camera without losing framing on FS-78, FC-60E, and SKY90II telescopes.

Quick answer

Install the Takahashi CAA between your telescope's focuser and your camera or diagonal, then loosen its lock ring to rotate the camera smoothly while keeping your target framed. Always re-tighten the ring before you start imaging.

Why a CAA beats loosening the focuser

Rotating your camera by loosening the focuser drawtube can shift focus and tilt the optical train. A dedicated camera angle adjuster like the Takahashi CAA provides a controlled rotation axis that keeps the sensor plane perpendicular to the optical axis, so you can reframe without losing focus or introducing flexure.

The CAA is especially useful for FS-78, FC-60E, and SKY90II owners who switch between visual and imaging configurations or who need to match a camera's orientation to a specific framing angle.

When the CAA is not the right tool

If your telescope already has a built-in rotator or if your imaging train is very short and lightweight, a CAA may add unnecessary back focus. Also, the CAA does not replace a field rotator for long-exposure imaging where you need to compensate for field rotation—it is a manual adjustment tool, not a motorized rotator.

Step-by-step CAA installation and use

  1. Attach the CAA to the focuser: Thread the CAA onto your telescope's focuser drawtube or visual back. Hand-tighten only—do not use tools that could mar the finish. Check that the CAA sits flush; any gap will cause tilt.
  2. Add your camera or diagonal: Thread your camera adapter or diagonal onto the camera side of the CAA. If you use a filter wheel or off-axis guider, insert it between the CAA and the camera. Keep the stack as short as possible to preserve back focus.
  3. Loosen the lock ring: Turn the CAA's lock ring counterclockwise just enough to allow the camera side to rotate freely. Do not unscrew it completely. The ring should move with light finger pressure, not spin loosely.
  4. Rotate to frame your target: While looking through the camera or at a live view, rotate the camera to the desired angle. The CAA allows smooth rotation without changing focus. Rotate slowly and watch for cable drag that could shift the camera.
  5. Tighten the lock ring: Once framed, turn the lock ring clockwise until snug. Do not over-tighten; firm finger pressure is enough to prevent rotation. Gently try to rotate the camera—it should not move.
  6. Verify focus and framing: Take a short test exposure or check live view to confirm focus and framing are unchanged. If focus shifted, re-check that all connections are tight. If you see tilt, loosen, reseat the CAA, and retighten evenly.
